Apple Vision Pro 2025: Incremental Upgrade or Strategic Reset for Spatial Computing?

The promise of spatial computing once felt like the next major leap in personal technology. When Apple introduced the Apple Vision Pro, it wasn’t just another gadget—it was positioned as the future of how we interact with digital content. Fast forward nearly two years, and a refreshed version has arrived. But instead of a bold reinvention, the latest update raises a more complex question: Is Apple refining a vision or quietly recalibrating its strategy?

This deep dive unpacks what’s actually new, what hasn’t changed, and what it all means for the future of mixed reality.


A Familiar Device with a New Core

At first glance, the updated Vision Pro looks nearly identical to its predecessor. That’s because, physically, it is.

The most significant upgrade lies beneath the surface: Apple has replaced the previous chip with the new Apple M5 chip. This aligns with Apple’s broader silicon roadmap, where base-level chips gradually trickle across multiple product categories—from tablets to laptops and now spatial devices.

What the M5 Upgrade Brings

While not revolutionary, the M5 introduces a set of meaningful, if subtle, improvements:

  • Faster app loading times
  • Improved rendering performance
  • Slightly higher refresh rate (up to 120Hz)
  • Enhanced power efficiency (up to ~20% longer battery life)

These upgrades contribute to a smoother experience overall. Apps launch quicker, interactions feel more responsive, and battery life stretches a bit further. However, none of these changes fundamentally alter how the device feels or what it enables.

In practical terms, this is refinement—not transformation.


Hardware: Almost Completely Unchanged

Despite expectations of a redesign, Apple has retained nearly every physical aspect of the original Vision Pro.

For a second-generation device, this level of consistency is unusual. Typically, early iterations address major usability concerns. In this case, one of the biggest criticisms weight remains unresolved.


The Real Upgrade: Comfort Over Power

If there’s one area where Apple has clearly invested effort, it’s ergonomics.

Introducing the Dual Knit Band

The most noticeable improvement comes in the form of a redesigned head strap system. The new Dual Knit Band replaces the original single-strap approach with a more balanced, dual-support structure.

Key enhancements include:

  • Better weight distribution across head and face
  • Adjustable tension via a dual-dial mechanism
  • Integrated counterweight using dense materials for balance

The result is a significantly more comfortable experience, especially during extended use. This change directly addresses early complaints about facial pressure and fatigue.

Interestingly, this improvement comes with a tradeoff: the overall device weight has slightly increased, largely due to the added counterbalancing materials.

Still, in day-to-day use, comfort matters more than raw weight and this update delivers where it counts.


Software Evolution Meets Hardware Limits

On the software side, the device benefits from the latest version of Apple’s spatial operating system, bringing features like:

  • More realistic digital avatars (Personas)
  • Spatial photo enhancements
  • Interactive, pinnable widgets in 3D space

These features push the ecosystem forward. However, they are not exclusive to the new hardware many are available on older models as well.

Devices like Meta Ray-Ban Smart Glasses demonstrate a fundamentally different approach:

Unlike bulky headsets, smart glasses integrate more naturally into daily life. They may offer fewer capabilities, but they win on convenience and accessibility.
