Rabbit R1 Review: A Bold AI Gadget That Feels More Like a Prototype

The race to build the next generation of AI-powered personal assistants is heating up and the Rabbit R1 is one of the most intriguing entries so far. Positioned as a standalone “AI in your pocket,” it promises to reduce your reliance on smartphones by handling tasks through natural language and automation.

It’s a compelling vision. But after spending time with the device, a more complicated reality emerges. The Rabbit R1 offers glimpses of a powerful future while struggling to justify itself in the present.


What Is the Rabbit R1?

The Rabbit R1 is essentially a dedicated AI assistant device, compact enough to carry like a small gadget rather than wear like a smart accessory.

A Distinctive Design Philosophy

Designed in collaboration with Teenage Engineering, the device stands out immediately:

  • Bright, unmistakable orange plastic body

  • Compact, square form factor (roughly pocket-sized)

  • A single action button for voice interaction

  • A scroll wheel for navigation

  • A rotating camera for visual input

Unlike some competitors, it includes a small built-in display, which shows responses alongside a constantly animated rabbit icon.

It’s playful, minimal, and intentionally different. But that design comes with trade-offs.


How It Works: Simple, Cloud-First AI

At its core, the Rabbit R1 is a cloud-dependent assistant. Nearly every request is processed remotely, which allows it to respond relatively quickly specially compared to similar devices in this category.

Interaction Model

Using the device is straightforward:

  1. Press and hold the button

  2. Ask a question or give a command

  3. Receive a spoken and text-based response

You can also:

  • Pair Bluetooth headphones

  • Use the built-in speaker

  • Access settings by physically shaking the device

Yes navigation includes shaking it like an Etch A Sketch, followed by scrolling and selecting with the wheel.

It’s quirky. Sometimes charming. Often inefficient.


Multimodal Capabilities: Vision Meets AI

One of the R1’s key features is its ability to “see” using the swiveling camera.

What It Can Do

In practice, this works reasonably well for basic tasks.

Point it at an object, ask what it is, and you’ll get a quick answer. Aim it at a long email or article, and it can generate a summary almost instantly.

However, beyond novelty and occasional convenience, the use cases remain limited.


Performance and Responsiveness

Compared to similar AI hardware, the Rabbit R1 is noticeably faster in response time. That said, expectations should be managed.

  • Responses are still dependent on cloud processing

  • Accuracy is inconsistent

  • Hallucinations (incorrect answers) occur frequently

Even basic factual queries can sometimes produce confidently wrong results.

Speed has improved but reliability remains a major issue.

The scroll wheel controls most navigation but it’s far from ideal:

Surprisingly, the Rabbit R1 does include a touchscreen but it’s barely utilized.

Where It Falls Short

  • You cannot navigate menus via touch

  • Tapping and swiping are largely disabled

  • The only meaningful use is typing in “terminal mode”

This raises an obvious question:

Why include a touchscreen if you can’t use it?

The likely answer is strategic avoiding direct comparisons to smartphones. But the result is a device that feels artificially limited.


Battery Life: A Major Weakness

Battery performance is one of the R1’s most significant flaws.

  • Requires multiple charges per day

Charging from 0 to 100% takes about 45 minutes, which is reasonable but doesn’t compensate for the short lifespan.

For a device meant to be always available, this is a serious drawback.


Missing Core Features

Despite being marketed as a personal assistant, the R1 lacks many basic capabilities:

  • No alarms or timers

  • No calendar integration

  • No email functionality

  • No photo or video recording

These omissions are difficult to ignore especially when smartphones already handle them effortlessly.

The R1’s most ambitious feature isn’t fully available yet—but it’s central to its vision.

What Is a Large Action Model?

Unlike traditional AI that generates text, a Large Action Model (LAM) is designed to:

  • Interpret user commands

  • Execute tasks across apps

  • Interact with interfaces like a human would

Instead of relying on APIs, it aims to control apps directly, mimicking user behavior.

Current Reality

At launch, support is extremely limited:

  • Uber

While software updates can improve devices over time, the initial experience often feels incomplete.
